Linden Mayor Derek Armstead was elected Democratic municipal chairman on Monday night, defeating State Sen. Nicholas Scutari (D-Linden) by seven votes.
The outcome had been expected since Armstead won control of a majority of county committee seats in the June 4 Democratic primary.
Armstead won 39 to 32, ousting Scutari.
Scutari remains unopposed in his bid for re-election as the Union County Democratic chairman tomorrow night.
Armstead fielded a slate of 64 county committee candidates for 72 seats in a direct challenge to Scutari’s post as municipal chairman.
In Roselle, Reginald Atkins tonight was re-elected Democratic municipal chairman. He had faced a fight with Councilwoman Denise Wilkerson.
Atkins is allied with Scutari and Assemblyman Jamel Holley (D-Roselle).
