Gottheimer wins Bergen Dem convention

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) won the organization line in Bergen County, scoring an outsized victory over rival Arati Kreibich in an online Democratic county convention.

Gottheimer defeated Kreibich by a vote of 488 to 145, a 77%-23% margin.

Kreibich, a Glen Rock councilwoman, is challenging Gottheimer from the left in the 5th district Democratic primary.

Gottheimer is seeking re-election to a third term.  He flipped the seat in 2016, ousting seven-term incumbent Scott Garrett (D-Wantage) in a district that Donald Trump carried by one point.

He has already won organization lines in Passaic and Warren counties.

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, county chairman Paul Juliano cancelled a convention scheduled for last week and instead held the contest online.

The result was an enormous turnout by county committee members.

Three other federal candidates won the Bergen convention by acclamation after their primary opponents declined to file petitions to have their names listed on the Bergen Democratic ballot.

U.S. Senator Cory Booker will run on the Bergen line, along with Reps. Bill Pascrell (D-Paterson), Albio Sires (D-West New York), and Gottheimer.

Joe Biden won the Bergen line in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
