Armstead denied admission to Union Democratic breakfast

Linden Mayor is supporting an independent against a Democrat for mayor of Dover

There was some drama this morning at the annual Union County Democratic pre-election breakfast when Linden Mayor Derek Armstead was refused admittance because he is supporting an independent mayoral candidate in Dover.

Armstead, who is also the Linden Democratic Municipal Chairman, was stopped at the door and asked to leave by party officials.

He refused to leave and called the Linden Police to assist him, even though the event was in Clark.   The Clark police also responded and told Armstead it was a private event and told him to leave,

Armstead was joined by Council President Michelle Yamakaitis and Councilman Ralph Strano.  Both were permitted to enter the event, but declined and left with the mayor.

In a text message today, Armstead said that the contribution to Dover Mayor James P. Dodd‘s campaign committee was never made.

“It was erroneously listed on my ELEC report.”

The report, filed with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission, shows that Armstead’s campaign committee contributed $1,000 to Dover for Everyone, a Dodd committee, on September 13.  No amended ELEC reports are available on the state website.

Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin was the headliner at the event and New Jersey Democratic State Committee Vice Chair Peg Schaffer was a guest speaker.
