The New Jersey Globe is calling the Democratic primary for State Assembly in the 28th district for incumbents Ralph Caputo (D-Nutley) and Cleopatra Tucker (D-Newark).

They have defeated their primary opponent, Stephen Burd.

Caputo and Tucker will face Republicans Joy Bembry-Freeman and Antonio Pires in the general election.

The 28th has been held by Democrats since the district was created in 1973.

Caputo was first elected to the Assembly in 1967, when he was 27, and served until Carl Orechio and John Dennis defeated him in the 1971 Republican primary.  He returned to the Assembly in 2007 after a 36-year absence.

Tucker was elected to the Assembly in 2007, taking the seat that her late husband had held from 1998 until his death in 2005.
