State Sen. Joe Pennacchio, an honorary state chair of President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, welcomed Rep. Jeff Van Drew into the Republican Party Saturday.
“Weaponizing impeachment, open borders, Medicare for all and the emergence of an unapologetic march towards socialism has opened up the eyes of many who have traditionally called themselves Democrats,” he said. “I welcome Congressman Van Drew into our Large political tent. I encourage other Democrats to follow suit.”
On Saturday, the New Jersey Globe reported Van Drew’s chief of staff had told members of the congressman’s campaign and congressional staffs that the first-term representative would be moving to the Republican party.
Some of those told have indicated they will resign.
Before news of Van Drew’s party switch broke, Pennacchio said Republicans should embrace Van Drew, whose staunch opposition to impeachment caused some local Democrats to balk to the point that Atlantic County Democratic Chairman Michael Suleiman told Van Drew he might not win a primary if he held course.
