The New Jersey Globe is projecting that State Sen. Michael Doherty (R-Washington), Assemblyman John DiMaio (R-Hackettstown), and Assemblyman Erik Peterson (R-Franklin) have won re-election to the 23rd legislative district.
Doherty defeated 2019 Democratic Assembly nominee Denise King, while DiMaio and Peterson beat Tewksbury Township Parks Committee Chair Hope Kaufman and recent Rutgers graduate Nick LaBelle.
Doherty first came to the Senate in 2009 when he beat out fellow member of the Assembly Marcia Karrow (R-Raritan) for the seat; DiMaio and Peterson succeeded Doherty and Karrow in the Assembly that same year.
Though the 23rd district was only won by Donald Trump by three points last November, it’s staunchly Republican on a state level, and has no problem re-electing its highly conservative delegation to the legislature.
Final 23rd district results:
Doherty 60.9% // King 39.1%
DiMaio 30.7%, Peterson 29.9% // Kaufman 19.9%, LaBelle 19.4%
