Will announce today at Progressive Caucus meeting

Bertin Lefkovic, a veteran New Jersey liberal activist, will announce his bid for Democratic State Chairman this afternoon at a meeting of the state party Progressive Caucus in Red Bank.

An Our Revolution New Jersey board member with twenty years of work on behalf of progressive causes, Lefkovic’s candidacy creates an interesting twist in the year-long fight over the state party chairmanship between incumbent John Currie and Essex County Democratic Chairman LeRoy Jones, Jr.

Progressives have been supporting Currie, the candidate backed by Gov. Phil Murphy, but many activists complain that Currie is also a party boss — he’s been the Passaic County Democratic Chairman since the 1990s.

Lefkovic was active in presidential campaigns for Howard Dean in 2004 and Bernie Sanders in 2016 .  He’s also worked on numerous congressional races when the party has nominated progressive candidates and represents Jamesburg on the Middlesex County Democratic Committee.
