Gov. Phil Murphy has extended a hand to both major Republican gubernatorial candidates.
“I reached out, as I did with Jack, and welcomed Doug to the race. These are both guys I know,” Murphy said during Friday’s virus briefing, referring to Republican gubernatorial candidates Doug Steinhardt and Jack Ciattarelli.
Steinhardt, the state Republican chairman, formally announced his bid Tuesday morning.
Murphy declined to give his thoughts on the Republican field, saying the venue was not an appropriate one.
“There’ll be a time for politics,” he said. “There’ll be a time for a good robust debate on where we’ve been and, I think more importantly, where we’re headed. But I won’t make the call. That’s not today.”
Perennial candidate Hirsh Singh is also seeking the Republican nod to take on Murphy.
