No decision yet on digital nominating petitions, Murphy says

Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration hasn’t determined whether candidates for office next year will once more need to collect signatures for their nominating petitions digitally, he said Friday.

“We haven’t made any decision yet on in-person versus digital, unless Parimal tells me otherwise, on petitions,” Murphy said, referring to chief counsel Parimal Garg.

2020’s filing day was a massive departure from the norm. Pushed by the threat posed by COVID-19, Murphy mandated that signatures be collected and, in most cases, delivered to election officials digitally.

Such nominating petitions generally become available shortly after New Year’s Day, so the runway there is a short one.
