Former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman will not appear at a fundraiser for the Middlesex County Republicans on October 5, according to a post made on the group’s Facebook page.
The reason for Whitman’s departure from the program was not immediately available. Some Republicans had urged Middlesex County Republican Chair Lucille Panos to rescind the invitation after Whitman told the Star-Ledger that she was hoping Democrats would win control of the U.S. House of Representatives this year.
“I’m hoping we lose the House, that would be a good thing. Congress could stand up to him and could be dialing back a lot of this. They have ceded too much to this president,” Whitman told the newspaper earlier this month.
Whitman has been a strong critic of President Donald Trump, but has urged the re-election of Rep. Leonard Lance in New Jersey’s 7th district.
Two other former GOP governors, Tom Kean and Chris Christie, will still be in attendance.
