The Middlesex County Republican Screening Committee voted to back Rik Mehta, 32-2, Wednesday night.
The non-binding vote comes not long after Mehta lost his first county convention to rival Senate candidate Hirsh Singh in Ocean County.
Mehta has lines in 11 of the state’s counties.
Middlesex County Republicans will hold their convention at Royal Albert’s Palace in Fords on March 14.
