George Norcross, others will keep Democratic National Committee posts for another four years

Marley, Burgos, Graham, McPherson set to win re-election

Update (6:19 PM): The New Jersey Democratic State Committee re-elected George E. Norcross III, Marcia Marley, Tonio Burgos, John F.X. Graham and Bernadette McPherson to four-year terms on the Democratic National Committee.

The five incumbent Democratic National Committee members from New Jersey are expected to be re-elected to new four-year terms this evening when the Democratic State Committee holds a virtual meeting to formally choose At-Large and Party Leader and Elected Official (PLEO) delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

The incumbents – George E. Norcross III, Marcia Marley, Tonio Burgos, John F.X. Graham and Bernadette McPherson – have no apparent opposition to their re-election bids.

Norcross’ re-election marks a slight détente with Gov. Phil Murphy, the titular head of the state Democratic Party.  Murphy had to have signed off on Norcross’ re-election, since he controls a majority of votes on the Democratic State Committee.

The slate leaves New Jersey’s Black Democrats without any representation, although John Currie has a vote on the Democratic National Committee as a result of his state party chairmanship.  Democratic State Committee Vice Chair Peg Schaeffer also has a DNC vote.

Currie will give up his national committee vote in June 2021 when LeRoy Jones, Jr. is set to become Democratic State Chairman.

Jones spent nearly a year challenging Currie for state chairman, but dropped out of the race late last year after two factions of the state Democratic Party agreed to a deal that would give Currie an extra eighteen months in office.

It’s not clear whether any New Jerseyans will wind up with At-Large seats on the Democratic National Committee.

In 2017, Democratic National Chairman Tom Perez removed New Jersey civil rights leader Barbara Caspar Siperstein from her At-Large seat after she backed his opponent, Keith Ellison for the top party post.
