Ocean County Democratic Chairman Wyatt Earp is not expected to take sides in the race for Democratic State Chairman anytime soon but does have a meeting scheduled with Gov. Phil Murphy to talk about the contest – possibly this weekend.
Both sides in the fight for control of the state party view Earp as favorable to their candidate: incumbent John Currie and his likely challenger, Essex County Democratic Chairman LeRoy Jones.
With the election one year away, Earp feels to rush to endorse anyone, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Murphy is backing Currie for re-election, while his lieutenant governor, Sheila Oliver, told the New Jersey Globe yesterday that she would back Jones.
Jones has already secured endorsements from county chairs in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Middlesex, Monmouth, Salem, and Union counties.
Currie has the backing of the Bergen, Hudson, Hunterdon, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and Warren county chairs.
In addition to Earp, county chairs in Mercer and Somerset have not yet announced their choice for state chairman.
