Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic nominee for Congress in New Jerseys 11th district

Daily Record supports Sherrill

Endorsement virtually the same as Bergen Record, skips local Morris County issues

The Daily Record has endorsed Mikie Sherrill for Conrgess in New Jersey’s 11th district against Republican Jay Webber, a six-term assemblyman from Morris County.

“Sherrill, while progressive on social issues, is hardly the extreme leftist that Webber claims. Indeed, her life experience, particularly from her time in the military, has taught her the value of moderation and “mission;” she will work with whomever she needs to in order to get things done, and advocate for the people of the 11th,” the newspaper said.  “She also wants to see power restored to the legislative branch as perhaps one way of curbing Trump’s worst tendencies.”

The endorsement of Sherrill, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, is nearly identical to the one also published today in The (Bergen) Record.  While the Daily Record is Morris County-based, the editorial does not seek to address any local issues in their endorsement, even though Webber has spent eleven years as a legislator representing the area.

Both newspapers are owned by Gannett.

“Mikie Sherrill reminds us a little of John McCain; she exudes what we in America once called the “can do spirit,’” the editorial board write.
