Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), now facing a primary challenge from the left in his bid to keep his 5th district House seat next year, has won the endorsement of one of Bergen County’s most popular elected officials, Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck).
“I am a Progressive Democrat. But we represent the ‘big tent’ party,” said Weinberg. “We might disagree on some issues, but we must be respectful of the varied districts our congressmembers represent.” Weinberg said.
Gottheimer has already begun rolling out endorsements after Glen Rock Councilwoman Arati Kreibach decided to challenge him in the June 2020 Democratic primary.
The Weinberg seal of approval could help Gottheimer overcome fears by some Democrats that he is too moderate for their tastes.
“Josh Gottheimer is an excellent representative of the values and the politics of the district he represents,” Weinberg said in a statement released this morning. “We need room in our party and in our country for the folks who believe in a society that is based on equality, but have differences along the way.”
Weinberg cited Gottheimer’s votes to “protect a woman’s right to choose, protect the civil rights of the LGBTQ community and all people of color, and stand by DREAMERS.”
“He also has fought to fix our crumbling infrastructure, which is a big issue for me,” Weinberg said. “I’m looking forward to having Josh there in 2020 when we coalesce to defeat the President.”
In 2016, Weinberg mentioend Rep. Scott Garrett’s “intolerance to the LGBT community” as a reason to send Gottheimer to Congress.
