Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) has picked up the endorsement of Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair), giving him the backing of a Democratic rising star in advance of the July 7 primary election in New Jersey’s 5th district.
“Congressman Josh Gottheimer has worked hard to serve the people of New Jersey’s 5th,” Sherrill. “Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, Congressman Gottheimer has put his constituents first, including fighting for increased assistance for the Paramus Veterans Home.”
Gottheimer and Sherill represent adjoining congressional districts that were both represented by Republicans for decades.
In 2016, Gottheimer unseated seven-term Rep. Scott Garrett (R-Wantage) for a seat Republicans had held for 36 years. Sherrill won the open 11th district seat in 2018, ending a 34-year GOP streak.
“He knows the importance of equal pay for equal work and restoring the full SALT deduction,” said Sherrill. “We need Congressman Gottheimer in the 5th District as we get through this crisis and look to the future.”
Gottheimer faces a challenge from progressive Arati Kreibich, a Glen Rock councilwoman.
The Bergen County Democrat has won recent endorsements from U.S. Senator Cory Booker, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Democratic Conference Chairman Hakeem Jeffries.
Gov. Phil Murphy said last year that he was backing Gottheimer for re-election.
