Singh never told him he’d self-fund, Cape May GOP chairman says

Cape May County Republican Chairman Marcus Karavan, who has endorsed Sam Fiocchi for the Republican nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 2nd district, says he has no recollection of Hirsh Singh pledging to spend his own money on his campaign.

“He did not make a definitive commitment to me,” Karavan told the New Jersey Globe.

Several top Republican leaders have said privately that Singh promised to self-fund his campaign to replace retiring GOP Rep. Frank LoBiondo.  Fiocchi and other past and present clients have said that Singh made the promise at numerous party events, including the Cape May County Republican convention.  Singh denies this, and a video tape of his speech does not say that he would write a personal check.

The notion that Singh would self-fund his campaign was debunked last week when a personal financial disclosure he filed with the U.S. House of Representatives showed he has no real assets beyond a retirement account worth between $50,000 and $100,000.

Karavan says that the convention was a busy time for him and he could not recall whether Singh made any commitments to others in Cape May.
