Sherrill raises $552k in Q2, rebuilding her campaign warchest

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) raised $552,000 during the second quarter of 2023; together with her first quarter haul of $443,000, the congresswoman’s campaign warchest now stands at a healthy $1.2 million.

“As grassroots support and enthusiasm for our campaign continues to grow, I am especially proud that nearly 75% of our donors are from New Jersey,” Sherrill said. “Our work to make NJ-11 a better and safer place to live is resonating across the state and I am so grateful to everyone who believes in our mission.”

Sherrill has been a strong fundraiser ever since she launched her campaign in 2017, when her first few fundraising quarters helped spook longtime Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-Harding) into retirement. She raised $6.3 million during the 2021-2022 campaign cycle – but spent $8.8 million on winning re-election, almost completely depleting her warchest.

That heavy spending came with a clear reward, though: a 19-point win against Republican Paul DeGroot, the largest margin of victory of her career (albeit one aided substantially by her district’s redrawn lines).

Republicans are unlikely to target Sherrill in 2024, so she probably won’t need to spend much to win a fourth term. But with the 2025 elections just down the road, there’s another reason Sherrill might want to raise and spend plenty of money: boosting her name recognition ahead of a prospective gubernatorial campaign.

Much like her current colleague and potential gubernatorial foe, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), Sherrill has also used her fundraising skills to assist state-level Democrats in New Jersey, hosting fundraisers this spring for the State Senate and Assembly Democrats.
