Menendez leads Hugin by 10 points in CBS News poll

By David Wildstein, October 07 2018 4:50 pm

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez holds a ten point lead over Republican Bob Hugin, 49%-39%, in a CBS News poll released on Sunday.

More than four out of ten voters (43%) say their vote is in opposition to President Donald Trump, while 30% say they want a Senator in support of Trump.  More than a quarter of New Jersey likely voters (27%) say their vote in the U.S. Senate race is not about Trump.

The poll is of likely voters and resembles a Quinnipiac University poll released last week that put Menendez up by eleven points over Hugin,  the millionaire retired drug maker CEO who is self-financing his bid for the United States Senate.   A Fairleigh Dickinson University poll had Menendez up by six, and a Stockton University poll that was widely criticized for its methodology, had Menendez leading by just two points.

72% of voters don’t view Menendez as honest or trustworthy, but 52% don’t think Hugin is either.

The CBS News poll interviewed 1,009 registered voters in New Jersey and was fielded between October 2–5, 2018 and has a margin of error of 3.6%.

Respondents were selected to be representative of registered voters in New Jersey in terms of age, race, gender, and education. Of the 1,009 respondents, 704 respondents were selected  from YouGov’s online panel, 217 respondents were selected from P2Sample’s online panel, and 88 were selected from Prodege’s online panel. The sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, education, and geography based on the American Community Survey, conducted by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, as well as 2016 Presidential vote.
