Hugin distances himself from Trump in new ad

Bob Hugin put out a new ad that attempts to put distance between the candidate and President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

“I often hear: ‘Will you stand up to President Trump?’ The answer is yes. Marines never back down from a fight,” Hugin says in the ad. “I’ve been independent my whole life. I’m pro-choice. And I support equal pay for equal work. I’ll protect patients with preexisting conditions. And fight to make New Jersey more affordable. I’ll always put New Jersey first. That’s my promise to you.”

Hugin was New Jersey Finance chair for Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Since then, Hugin has attempted to put space between himself and Trump — likely a smart move considering the president’s faltering favorability numbers in New Jersey.

A Rutgers-Eagleton poll released last week found the president’s favorability was underwater by 19 points, 37%-56%. His approval rating was slightly better at 41%-56%.

Sen. Bob Menendez, against whom Hugin is running, put out an ad on Wednesday attempting to link Hugin to Trump.

The script:

Trump and Hugin. It’s way more than a handshake. Bob Hugin was Trump’s top New Jersey fundraiser.  Hugin stood by Trump’s tax breaks for the super-rich, while stripping our property tax deduction.  Hugin stood by Trump’s Supreme Court picks. Hugin stood by Trump when he tried killing Obamacare, attacked women and made racist comments. Bob Hugin will never stand up to Trump. To stop Trump, stop Hugin.”
