Grossman: treatment of Kavanaugh just like lynching Blacks and Jews

GOP House candidate says ‘no evidence’ that Supreme Court nominee did anything wrong

Congressional candidate Seth Grossman on Tuesday compared the accusations of sexual assault against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the lynchings of black and Jewish men in the 20th century.

“To me, there’s no evidence whatsoever that Kavanaugh did anything wrong, and the fact that he’s being forced to defend himself 35 years later is nothing less of an outrage,” Grossman said. “The whole circumstance of waiting until the completion of the hearings before even bringing this to his attention, everything – I guess the best I can say is, it reminds me of when innocent Jewish and black men were lynched 100 years ago based on unsubstantiated accusations of a single woman. That’s what it reminds me of. It’s a modern-day lynching as far as I’m concerned.”

He said as an attorney for the last 42 years, he’s got a good sense of when evidence exists and when it doesn’t.

Grossman’s response, which, along with a recording of the same, is included in full at the bottom of this article, came as answer to a question about how he viewed other Republican candidates in the state, including GOP U.S. Senate nominee Bob Hugin, demurring on Kavanaugh’s nomination until the results of a week-long FBI investigation into sexual assault allegations against the nominee.

Grossman’s comments received a sharp rebuke from Passaic County Freeholder Assad Akhter, one of the highest ranking Muslim elected officials in New Jersey.

“It’s a sick statement from a sick man, someone who doesn’t just cheer-lead for racists, he is a racist,” Akhter said.  “This is the same man Bob Hugin doesn’t have the moral fiber to denounce.”

A former Atlantic County freeholder, Grossman is the Republican candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 2nd district, where Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-Ventnor) is retiring after twelve terms.  He faces Democrat Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis), a State Senator.

Response of Republican congressional candidate Seth Grossman:

“I can only comment on what I’ve seen, and what I’ve seen is the smear campaign against Kavanaugh is absolutely disgusting, and I’m doing everything I can to defend him and defend future men like Kavanaugh who may face similar smears.

In other words, as a person, as a lawyer who’s spent – let me figure out how many years – who spent 42 years representing both men and women in these kind of cases, I think I have a pretty good sense as to when there’s evidence to support charges and when there’s not.

And to me, there’s no evidence whatsoever that Kavanaugh did anything wrong, and the fact that he’s being forced to defend himself 35 years later is nothing less of an outrage.

The whole circumstance of waiting until the completion of the hearings before even bringing this to his attention, everything – I guess the best I can say is, it reminds me of when innocent Jewish and black men were lynched 100 years ago based on unsubstantiated accusations of a single woman.

That’s what it reminds me of. It’s a modern-day lynching as far as I’m concerned.

So, that’s how I see it. Now, I can’t comment how anyone else would see it, but that’s how I see it.”
