Republican Women for Progress, a super PAC that is supporting women congressional candidates from both parties who oppose the “Trump personality cult” has launched a new digital ad supporting Democrat Mikie Sherrill for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district.
The ad features Ruth Zowader, a self-described “lifelong registered Republican,” who says Donald Trump’s 2016 election made her more politically active and a supporter of Sherrill.
“It’s clear to me that Trump does not value women. He abuses women,” Zowader says. “I’m personally unhappy that the Republican Party has not stood up for the women in the party.”
According to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission, the super PAC has spent $76,000 so far in support of Sherrill, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor who is locked in a close race against Jay Webber, a six-term assemblyman.
Yesterday, Sherrill picked up the endorsement of Barbara Curran, a former assemblywoman who was the first woman to serve as executive director of the New Jersey Republican State Committee.
Republican Women for Progress has been heavily funded by billionaire Reid Hoffman, a founder of LinkedIn.
“We are Republicans, but we are Americans first,” said Meghan Milloy and Jennifer Pierotti Lim, co-founders of Republican Women for Progress PAC. “If the Republican Party is to be viable in the future, we must defeat the worst of Donald Trump’s rubber-stamping enablers in Congress, with Democrats if necessary, and replace them with individuals of good character who can provide moral leadership.”
