Former Rep. Gabby Gifford’s gun safety organization endorsed a second member of New Jersey’s Republican House delegation Friday.
The Group, Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence, backed Rep. Chris Smith over his Democratic Challenger Josh Welle. Earlier Friday, the group endorsed Rep. Leonard Lance.
“Gabby Giffords knows personally the horrors that can come from guns falling into the wrong hands, and I thank her and her husband — and their coalition of veterans, law enforcement officers, gun owners, and others—for their support and their efforts to stop gun violence,” Smith said. “The endorsement from Giffords Courage to Fight Gun Violence underscores my commitment to work for bipartisan, common sense efforts to protect all Americans — including and especially students — from gun violence.”
Smith said he supports measures like expanded background checks, school safety, closing gun show loopholes and advancing mental health programs.
The National Rifle Association gave Smith a 23% rating, a far smaller number than many other Congressional Republicans received.
