Will Cunningham takes sides in race to unseat Van Drew

Will Cunningham, who sought the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 2nd district in 2018 and 2020, is supporting Tim Alexander for the chance to take on Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) this year.

“Tim is a tireless advocate for the protection of equal rights and voting rights, and his experience as a Civil Rights attorney means he knows exactly where our laws fall short,” Cunningham said.  “As the proud father of a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he is committed to ensuring all people are treated fairly and with respect no matter how they identify.”

A former congressional aide, Cunningham challenged Van Drew in the 2018 Democratic primary and then after the congressman’s 2019 party switch, sough the chance to challenge him in the last election.

“Tim has the vision, drive, and plans to bring real change to South Jersey,” stated Cunningham.  “He knows that it will take all of us working together to win this race and make those plans a reality.”

A former prosecutor, Alexander faces three other Democrats for the chance to take on Van Drew, but the contest for the Atlantic County organization line at their March 20 convention appears to be a two-way contest with former Egg Harbor Board of Education member Hector Tavarez.

Tavarez, a retired police officer, has the support of Atlantic County Sheriff Eric Scheffler.

Two other aspirants, Rev. Curtis Green, a minister, college professor and U.S. Army veteran; and newcomer Carolyn Rush, do not appear to have made any headway.

Cunningham, who worked for U.S. Senator Cory Booker and the late Rep. Elijah Cummings, finished second at the 2018 Atlantic County Democratic convention with 41 votes.  In 2020, he received 21 votes.  The 2020 Democratic nominee, Amy Kennedy, has already endorsed Alexander.
