Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) raised over $100,000 to help Democratic women win election to the legislature and local office this year.

Sherrill’s second annual “Elect More Women” event was sponsored by the three-term congressman’s political action committee, Gateway to Leadership.

First Lady Tammy Murphy was among the headliners at the fundraiser, which was attended by some major Democratic leaders from across the state.  Five women county chairs were listed as event co-chairs.

“In the last few elections, we’ve seen what’s possible when women run for office.  This November, I’m proud to support and campaign for Democrats running for Senate and Assembly – especially women who are fighting to protect access to reproductive freedom, bring down the cost of child care, and protect our kids from the epidemic of gun violence,” Sherrill said.  “Too much is on the line this November to stand on the sidelines.  Last night’s event will help these candidates get their message out and keep Trenton blue in November.”

The event gives Sherrill a significant warchest to boost women candidates in 2023 as she mulls a potential bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 2025.  Gateway to Leadership had $41,012 cash-on-hand as of June 30.

“If we’re going to learn something from the life and legacy of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, it is to be unapologetic and speak truth to power,” said Teresa Ruiz, the majority leader of the New Jersey State Senate.  “We’re working together to build a future where women aren’t just the ‘firsts’ anymore — but are in every single corner and space, leading where decisions are made. It’s our duty to continue empowering communities and electing people who represent the rich diversity of New Jersey.”

Jackie Jones delivered a tribute to Oliver at the event.
