Norcross registered to vote in Florida in 2020, will step down as Democratic National Committeeman

Democratic powerhouse says he was mistakenly told he could hold post despite lack of N.J. residency

George E. Norcross III , one of the most powerful state Democratic leaders of his generation, registered to vote in Florida in 2020 and has not voted in New Jersey in the last two elections.

As a Democratic National Committeeman from New Jersey, Norcross’ move to Palm Beach put him in violation of DNC by-laws that require national committee members to be residents of the state they represent

As a result, Norcross will step down from his national party post on Monday.

“It is no secret that for a number of years, I have owned a second home in Florida and recently, I became a legal resident in the state,” Norcross told the New Jersey Globe.  “I was advised I could continue to serve as a member of the DNC under its rules.  That advice appears to be mistaken and I am resigning from the DNC effective tomorrow morning.”

Norcross registered to vote in Palm Beach on July 22, 2020, records show.

The next day, Norcross was re-elected to serve as a national committeeman after a vote by the New Jersey Democratic State Committee.

State party leaders did not know that Norcross was no longer a New Jersey voter when they included him on their slate of candidates, sources told the New Jersey Globe.

Norcross was a superdelegate to the 2020 Democratic National Convention, casting his vote for President Joe Biden.

Under state party by-laws, there is no special election to fill the vacant seat on the Democratic National Committee.  Democratic State Chairman LeRoy Jones, Jr. can appoint a replacement at the next state committee meeting.
