Welle wins Mercer Democratic vote

Ex-Navy officer now has all 3 organization lines

Democratic congressional candidate Josh Welle won the Democratic organization line in Mercer County tonight — defeating rival Jim Keady with over 60% of the vote.  He has already won endorsements in Monmouth and Ocean counties and will run in the primary as the organization candidate in his bid to oust 19-term Republican Rep. Christopher Smith.

Smith was first elected in 1980, after incumbent Frank Thompson was indicted in the Abscam scandal.  He held the seat after extraordinarily several tough races in the 1980’s, but he has now spent most of his career in a heavily Republican district.
