Democratic municipal chairs in Union County will meet later this afternoon to pick freeholder candidates to run on the organization line, and to decide whether Linda Weber or Tom Malinowski will have their support in the 7th district congressional race.
The political landscape changed last month after State Sen. Nicholas Scutari (D-Linden) won a special election for county chairman. He defeated Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr by ten percentage points. That put a Mahr supporter, Freeholder Mohamed Jalloh (D-Union), on the chopping block.
Another freeholder, Bruce Bergen (D-Springfield), a Scutari supporter, is not seeking re-election. Scutari said he is going to concentrate on his law practice.
Democrats allied with Scutari are backing former Roselle Councilwoman Andrea Staten and Kim Palmieri-Mouded of Westfield to run on a ticket with incumbent Alex Mirabella (D-Fanwood). Staten and Palmieri-Mouded are favored to beat Jalloh at this insider vote.
Malinowski is the slight favorite to win the Union organization line against Weber, whose campaign could come to an end today. Weber has the lines in Somerset and Essex, while Malinowski has them in Hunterdon, Warren and Morris. Weber has pledged to drop out of the race if she doesn’t have enough lines in counties that make up 51% of the Democratic primary vote.
