Assemblymembers Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (D-Trenton) and Anthony Verrelli (D-Hopewell) have won re-election to the 15th legislative district unopposed, the New Jersey Globe projects, with no Republicans or independent candidates filing to run against them.
Reynolds-Jackson and Verrelli also drew no opposition in the Democratic primary, essentially guaranteeing their re-election the moment that candidate filing closed in March. The deep-blue 15th district covers Trenton and several of its close-in suburbs, including Ewing, Lawrence, and Hopewell.
Both assemblymembers were first elected in 2018 special conventions: Reynolds-Jackson to succeed now-State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio, Verrelli to replace now-Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora. The pair now chairs two notable committees in Trenton: Education for Reynolds-Jackson, Labor for Verrelli.
It’s possible that the district will host a more interesting election in 2027, when the Senate seat held by 84-year-old State Sen. Shirley Turner (D-Lawrence), an iconoclastic Democrat and the oldest member of the legislature, will be up for election.
