Pintor Marin, Speight win in LD29

Newark-based district is one of state’s bluest

Assemblywomen Eliana Pintor Marin (D-Newark) and Shanique Speight (D-Newark) have won re-election in the 29th legislative district, the New Jersey Globe projects, far from a surprise in the deep-blue Newark seat.

As of 11:46 p.m. and with nearly all votes counted, Pintor Marin and Speight have a combined 84% of the vote to the 16% earned by Republicans Daniela Ferreira Almeida and Noble Milton.

Pintor Marin and Speight faced no primary opposition this year, even as Pintor Marin and Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz (D-Newark) aligned with Sherrill over Newark Mayor Ras Baraka in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

Since 2018, Pintor Marin has been the chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, making her one of the most influential members of the legislature with sway over how tens of billions of dollars are spent. Gov. Phil Murphy has presided over each of those budgets, but now Pintor Marin will be going into a new gubernatorial administration with eight years’ of experience under her belt.
