The New Jersey Globe is projecting that State Sen. Teresa Ruiz (D-Newark), Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin (D-Newark), and Assemblywoman Shanique Speight (D-Newark) have won re-election to the 29th legislative district.
The single candidate who filed to run against them in the Newark-based district, independent Debra Salters, lost her bid for the Assembly.
With the retirement of Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck), Ruiz is set to become the second-most powerful Democrat in the Senate. The senator, who was elected in 2007 as the state’s first-ever Latina senator, is currently third-in-command as Senate President Pro Tempore.
Pintor Marin was appointed to the Assembly in 2013, and has since become the chair of the Assembly Budget Committee; Speight joined the delegation in 2018, succeeding short-serving Assemblywoman Blonnie Watson (D-Newark).
Final 29th district results:
Ruiz 100%
Pintor Marin 49.1%, Speight 48.3% // Salters 2.6%
