Joseph Muniz, a top soldier in the North Bergen political machine of Mayor/State Sen. Nicholas Sacco, is the leading candidate to replace Vincent Prieto in the New Jersey State Assembly.

Prieto, the former Assembly Speaker, resigned last month to become the chief executive officer of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.  The choice to replace him in the solidly Democratic 32nd district belongs to Sacco.  A deal to give the seat to Antonio Suarez, the brother of the Hudson County prosecutor, fell through last week.

Muniz holds a $183,000-a-year job as an administrator of the Hudson County Schools of Technology, and earns an extra $77,000 as a director of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey – a direct appointment made by Prieto.  He serves as the chairman of the North Hudson Community Action Corporation.

In addition to his full-time job and his part-time Horizon post, Muniz also works as a business development officer for Remington & Vernick, a politically active engineering firm, and has his own political consulting firm, Muniz Associates.

If Munoz wins the special election convention this month, he will need to run in a June primary and then a November general election to fill the remainder of Prieto’s term.

  1. This probably means he moves up to the Senate in ‘21 and a Kearny or Secaucus politico gets the open Assembly seat.

  2. Na. Too many better candidates Sacco has to pick from that don’t offend everyone and their mother. This guys toxic.

  3. I agree. There would be an uprising if this joker was the selection. Sacco has plenty of good people to choose from. Maybe a female is the way to go.
