Montville Township Committeewoman June Witty is facing calls for resignation after a she posted a comparison of Democrats to Nazis on her Facebook page.

Witty, a retired school nurse and a Republican, was censured by the all-GOP governing body last night.  Her colleagues on the township committee also called for her resignation.

The social media post suggested that Nazis “hate jews” and that Democrats “hate jews and whites.”

The censure was supported by all four Republicans on the Township Committee.

“The Mayor and Township Committee recognize that as elected officials, statements, writings, including social media posts, are matters that may in some regards be considered personal, are still accessible for viewing by constituents and members of the public,: the resolution said.  “Each member of the governing body vehemently rejects and finds to be inappropriate, offensive and unbecoming of an elected official.”

Witty did not return a phone call seeking comment.

If Witty resigns, the Republican County Committee will submit three names to the governing body to fill the seat.  There will also be a special election for her unexpired term on the November ballot.
