Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River) wants the Justice Department to release the findings of a comprehensive review of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Following the Parkland shooting, MacArthur wants Attorney General Jeff Sessions to provide states with some direction to ensure that there is an acceptable minimum standard across the nation for background checks.
“While I have consistently supported robust funding for NICS, funding without reform is not enough,” said MacArthur. “It is clear that there are flaws in the system. For these reasons, I request that the Department of Justice release the findings from the review of NICS and ensure that our states have guidance on the best background check practices. I know you agree that doing nothing to stop gun violence in our communities is irresponsible. We must work together and advance real solutions to protect our children and neighborhoods.”
