Senator Gopal Offers Condolences to Senate President Sweene
OCEAN TOWNSHIP – Senator Vin Gopal offers his sincerest condolences to Senate President Steve Sweeney for the heartbreaking loss of his father, Robert C. Sweeney.
“The loss of a parent is always hard to bear. I offer Sen. Sweeney my sincerest condolences and hope that he finds strength and solace in these difficult moments. Mr. Sweeney lived a good, long life and we celebrate his memory in the wake of his loss,” said Sen. Gopal.
“Mr. Sweeney was a dedicated labor leader and without his commitment, the labor movement — which fought for safer conditions for workers and more progressive social policies that helped transform New Jersey — would have struggled immensely. His legacy will live on in every union worker that calls New Jersey home.”
Robert Sweeney, 86, was a longtime labor leader, serving as president and business manager of Local 399 of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers for 25 years before he retired in 2012. Sen. Sweeney followed in his father’s footsteps, serving as the organization’s vice president.
