One of Donald Trump’s top New Jersey supporters is soliciting gift cards to help federal employees who live in his hometown to cope with the financial strains of the federal government shutdown.
Nutley Town Commissioner Steve Rogers, a former gubernatorial candidate who was named to Trump’s re-election advisory board in 2017, says furloughed federal employees can use the gift cards “for the purchase of groceries and other basic essentials.”
“The name of all recipients receiving gift cards will be kept strictly confidential,” Rogers said. “If you are currently a federal government employee who has been adversely affected by the shutdown, please feel free to contact our department.”
Rogers was one of Trump’s earliest New Jersey supporters. He is not seeking re-election in Nutley next year in order to focus on Trump’s re-election.
