Bob Menendez’s campaign put out a new ad ahead of the senator’s debate with Bob Hugin Wednesday, seeking to tie the latter to Donald Trump.
“Imagine a United States Senate giving Donald Trump everything he wants,” Menendez says in the ad, which does not mention Hugin by name.
The messaging follows one of Menendez’s primary attack lines. The senator likely hopes that he can keep independents in his corner by linking Hugin to Trump, whose popularity in the state leaves something to be desired.
A Rutgers-Eagleton poll released Wednesday found Trump’s favorables 14 points underwater, 39%-53%.
That shouldn’t be too tough of a sell considering Hugin was New Jersey finance chair for the Trump campaign in 2016.
The issue will likely be front and center at tonight’s debate on NJTV, as will Menendez’s own ethics issues.
