Trump State Department official loses party post in landslide

Colts Neck rejects ex-legislator Casagrande

Former Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande, who joined the Trump administration in April, lost her race for Republican County Committee in Colts Neck on Tuesday.

Dina Ryan defeated Casagrande by a wide margin, 84 to 47 (69%-31%) in the district 3 race.  Ryan had the endorsement of the Monmouth County Republican Organization in her race against Casagrande.

Thomas Orgo, who ran with Ryan, defeated Casagrande running mate Thomas Sullivan, by three votes, 71 to 68.

Casagrande, 41,  joined the U.S. Department of State as a special advisor to Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Marie Royce.  According to published reports, she is planning to move her family to Washington after the current school year ends.   She started her new job on April 30, after the filing deadline for the June primary.

She was elected to the State Assembly in 2007, defeating Democratic incumbent Michael Panter.  She served four terms before losing to Democrats Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey in 2015, a casualty of voter disapproval with Gov. Chris Christie.
