Union City, where Mayor/State Sen. Brian P. Stack could potentially deliver about 12,000 votes to his candidate in a presidential primary year, Bob Menendez’s hometown is now entirely Tammy Murphy Country.
In addition to Stack, the GOTV King, Murphy today received endorsements from the four city commissioners – Lucio Fernandez, Maryury Martinetti, Celin Valdivia, and Wendy Grullon — Hudson County Commissioner Fanny Cedeno, and all 78 members of the Democratic county committee in Union City.
“Tammy Murphy is a respected community leader who has led several major state initiatives while serving as first lady, especially in the areas of improving maternal and infant health, education, and climate change,” Stack said. “From protecting the rights of women to protecting our environment to finding solutions to gun violence, I am confident Tammy will be a great senator for New Jersey and the nation.”
Stack’s decision to endorse Murphy on the first day of her candidacy is a blow to Menendez, who grew up in Union City and, like Stack, began his political career as a teenage aide to Union City Mayor/State Sen. William Vincent Musto. Menendez was 20 when he won a seat on the Union City Board of Education; he served as Union City’s mayor, and as an assemblyman and state senator before his election to Congress in 1992.
While Menendez ultimately turned on Musto, testifying against him in a federal racketeering trial and then running against him, unsuccessfully, Stack remained loyal to Musto to the end.
When he ran for re-election to the U.S. Senate In 2018, he won 82% of the vote against Republican Bob Hugin, who also grew up in Union City.
Now under indictment for accepting bribes and serving as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, Menendez has now been boxed out from receiving support from even a single member of a local Democratic organization he once ran.
