Saleh the likely winner of remainder of Yun’s term

Jersey City Ward D Councilman Yousef Saleh holds a decisive lead over four other candidates to win the remainder of late Councilman Michael Yun’s unexpired term.

He leads county employee Patrick Ambrossi by 3,524 votes, and it does not appear there are enough votes to bridge the gap.

Former Yun campaign manager Cynthia Hadjiyannis, retired firefighter Rafael Torres and Lenny Lambert, who ran as an “All Lives Matter” candidate, are running behind the two.

Saleh was appointed to fill Yun’s seat in May. The councilman died in April after contracting COVID-19.

The likely victory could mean Saleh, the first Muslim to sit on the city’s council, will serve out the remaining 14 months of Yun’s term.

His appointment expanded Mayor Steve Fulop’s working majority on the council from five to six. Fulop, along with Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, hosted a fundraiser for Saleh earlier this month.
