Councilman Dennis O’Neil defeated former Councilman Joseph Aromando to win the remainder of Mayor Robert Hanold’s unexpired term Tuesday.
The race wasn’t a close one. O’Neil more than doubled Aromando’s vote total, defeating him 418-170. That’s a 42-point margin.
Hanold died in January at the age of 76. By then, he had served on the borough Council for close to 11 years and was six months into his first term as Mayor.
The borough council appointed O’Neil to fill the seat in February. He’ll hold it until June 30, 2022, when Hanold’s term expires.
Aromondo served a single four-year term on the council between 1998 and 2002. He’s remained active in politics since then, mounting numerous, if unsuccessful, bids for local office. Tuesday’s campaign was his 13th since he lost his council seat.
