Ocean City Councilman Bob Barr has joined Rep. Jeff Van Drew and switched his party affiliation from Democratic to Republican.

“This isn’t a hard decision for me,” Barr said in a Facebook post.

Barr had been an unpaid aide to Van Drew for fifteen years

“I have had the privilege to work with Jeff. Part of my duties have included sitting in on every meeting that he has while in our district I have sat with everyone from Governors to everyday folks,” Barr said.

Barr, who has cerebral palsy and campaigns door-to-door in a wheelchair,  won a 4th ward city council seat in a May 2016 non-partisan election and says he knocked on more than 3,000 doors from his wheelchair.

He is up for re-election in May.

Barr had announced last year that he would seek the open State Assembly seat of Bob Andrzejczak, who was replacing Van Drew in the State Senate.

Two weeks later, Barr dropped out of the race when Van Drew made it clear he wanted Matthew Milam to get the seat.
