A slate of Republican candidates for the Marlboro Township Council will get a second chance to fill out their ticket after Superior Court Judge Kathleen Sheedy extended the petition filing deadline until tomorrow.
The move allows a replacement candidate, Oleg “Alex” Gampel, to gather petition signatures in advance of Wednesday’s 4 PM filing deadline.
Four weeks ago, Aldo Patruno filed to run for council on a “Marlboro First Republicans” slate, but withdrew – verbally, it appears – on March 27, three days after the filing deadline.
While some offices have committees on vacancies to designate replacement candidates, the state law on replacement candidates for municipal office requires a new petition signed by at least 50% of the signatories of the original candidate’s petition.
Gampel missed the window, but Sheedy, citing the need for voter choice, opted to reopen the filing more than three weeks after the deadline.
Sheedy’s decision means that vote-by-mail ballots in Marlboro won’t go out by Saturday, along with other Monmouth County municipalities.
Gampel wants to run with Nicholas Stella and Charles Anastasia in the June 10 Republican primary against incumbents Antoinette DiNuzzo, Michael Milman, and Junad Qazi.
