For municipalities that still hold school board elections in April, the filing deadline to run in 4 PM today.
Hackensack, Newark, Irvington, North Bergen, New Brunswick, Passaic are among just a small handful of towns and cities that have held on to the old tradition of April elections, where turnout averages at south of 10% in the 2019 elections.
Most of the state’s more than 500 school districts moved Board of Education elections to November following a 2012 law that also largely ended the tradition of voter approval of school district budgets.
The filing deadline for the May non-partisan municipal elections is March 9, followed by the March 30 filing deadline to run in the June Democratic and Republican primary elections.
