Monmouth County Freeholder John Curley is taking aim at the Republican county leadership.
Curly, running as an independent after losing party support following a censure by his colleagues over sexual harassment allegations, on Friday celebrated a failed challenge to his nominating petitions he said was filed by Republican county chair Shaun Golden.
“The Monmouth County Republican boss Shaun Golden was so upset with my decision to run as an Independent that he filed a formal challenge to my petition with the Monmouth County Clerk,” Curley said in a release. “This County Clerk, by the way, is also the Monmouth County Republican Vice-Chair. Imagine that! Can you say conflict of interest?”
Curley said the challenge filed by Golden took aim at fewer than half of the signatures on more than 450 signatures on his nominating petitions.
Freeholder candidates require only 100 signatures to qualify for a run, so even if all the challenged signatures were invalidated – only 133 were – Curley’s candidacy would not be in jeopardy.
