Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland leads 25-year-old challenger Jin Han Kim by just 13 votes in an unexpectedly close race that could still be an upset.

Kim, policy consultant at BIT North America, was born in Korea and emigrated to the United States at age 12.

Edgewater is 35.5% Asian, according to the 2010 U.S. Census and is estimated to have a Korean population of 19%.

It is not immediately clear how many provisional ballots were cast.  New Jersey law allows vote-by-mail ballots postmarked by Tuesday to be counted if they arrive at the Bergen County Board of Elections by close of business on Thursday.

  1. Edgewater seems like just another small New Jersey town mismanaged by amateurs. So, maybe a young mayor from the Korean community can do better. A volunteer fire department for a town on the Gold Coast of Bergen County? Really? Years ago, as a reporter for The Record, I covered a fire in an Edgewater garden apartment building. I was told the volunteers responded to the alarm, got to the building and didn’t see any smoke, so left. The fire, racing through the cockloft under the roof, destroyed the building, and for years, the scorched structure served as a testament to their incompetence.
