State Sen. Michael Doherty (R-Oxford) says that it’s a mistake for Bergen County Republicans to welcome the return of former sheriff Michael Saudino, who resigned last year after being caught on tape making racist and homophobic remarks.
“Michael Saudino should not be accepted back into the Bergen GOP. He is a rat who left the party to maintain his position as sheriff,” Doherty said, referring to Saudino’s 2016 party switch.
Doherty cautioned that Bergen Republicans might regret bringing him back into the GOP tent.
“He was forced to resign after making racist comments. How many racist comments did he make that were never recorded?” Doherty said. “It’s absurd that he was given a platform to address the Bergen GOP. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.”
Bergen County GOP chairman Jack Zisa announced on Tuesday night that Saudino was returning to the Republicans.
He jumped parties for personal gains once he will do it again.
