A slate of Democratic incumbents running for re-election in Bergen County – Sheriff Anthony Cureton, Surrogate Michael Dressler, County Clerk John Hogan, and Commissioners Steven Tanelli and Tracy Silna Zur – have all likely emerged victorious, though by narrower margins than might have been expected.
Republicans ran Timothy Walsh and Ronald Joseph Lin for county commission and Simone Tsigounis for county clerk, but their most notable candidates campaigned for the other two offices.
Robert Kugler, the Saddle Brook police chief who has been charged with official misconduct, ran against Cureton for the sheriff’s office, while former Chris Christie aide Bridget Anne Kelly of Bridgegate fame ran for county clerk.
No Republican politician has won a county-level race in Bergen County since the last two Republican freeholders were defeated in 2016.
