Democrat gains 17 votes after recently-found ballots counted

Berkeley Heights Councilwoman Susan Poage now trails by 93

Berkeley Heights Councilwoman Susan Poage picked up 17 votes on Monday after 109 ballots found uncounted in a box last week netted her a 59 to 42 total.

The Democratic incumbent now trails Democrat Jeffrey Varnerin by 93 votes, 4,092 to 3,999, with a full recount set to begin today.

Union County election officials have discovered 109 uncounted ballots for Berkeley Heights last week while preparing for the recount.

Superior Court Judge Alan Lesnewich ruled this morning that they were to be counted separately.

“That box was marked as being received before being out in a secure storage room,” Union County election administrator Nicole DiRado told the New Jersey Globe last week.  “This is purely an honest, human error.”
