More than 100 provisional ballots will be counted this evening in the race for the Democratic nomination for mayor of Palisades Park.

Incumbent James Rotundo trails councilman Christopher Chung by 18 votes, 1,092 to 1,074.  A third candidate, Charles Park, received 65 votes.  The tally includes Vote by Mail ballots.

If elected, Chung would become the first Korean-American mayor in a town that has a majority Asian population.  The 2010 census reported that 51% of Palisades Park residents are of Korean ancestry.

Rotundo has been mayor since 2004.

The uncertainty of the primary election results will affect the reorganization of the local Democratic County Committee tonight, as county committee members elected last Tuesday might not be certified in time.

The winner of the Democratic primary will run unopposed in the general election.
